Southern Africa International Arbitration Conference – 15-16 November 2017

Talkmore Chidede, tralac researcher, participated at the 2nd Annual Southern Africa International Arbitration Conference (SAIAC 2017) held on November 15th and 16th in Johannesburg, South Africa. SAIAC provides a platform for international arbitration practitioners in Southern Africa to network, promote their work and discuss developments in international arbitration in the region.

The theme of the SAIAC 2017 was “Regional Economic Agreements and International Arbitration”. The event included presentations from arbitration experts and practitioners, and a training component on international arbitration facilitated by experienced international counsel and arbitrators.

Talkmore presented on “International arbitration in Southern African Development Community (SADC)”. His presentation focused on recent international arbitration developments within the SADC region including inter alia the demise of the SADC Tribunal and the recent amendments of the SADC Finance and Investment Protocol, which saw the removed investors’ access to international arbitration.

He further illustrated some international arbitration challenges in SADC that were presented in the case between Swissbourgh Diamond Mines (Pty) Limited and the Kingdom of Lesotho.
